Bartsch Leads Second USAV Red-Blue Scrimmage

USAV HOSTS SECOND RED-BLUE SCRIMMAGE OF SUMMER

The USA women’s volleyball team hosted its second Red-Blue scrimmage of the summer. The scrimmage consisted of four sets that were all played to 25 points. Players were rotated around to both teams throughout the match, with the Red Team ultimately winning three of the four sets: 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19.

There were a total of 16 different players that scored at least one point throughout the match. Outside hitter Michelle Bartsch led both teams with 18 kills, five aces, and three blocks. She was followed by outside hitter Sonja Newcombe with 15 kills and three blocks. Outside hitter Madi Kingdon contributed 12 kills and three blocks. Middle-blocker Molly McCage charted six kills, three aces, and one block. Setter Micha Hancock collected four aces, two kills, and one block in just two sets of play. Libero Justine Wong-Orantes was credited with 21 receptions on a 38% positive reception.

Two players also made their debut for the USA this summer. The 2016 AVCA Division 1 Player of the Year, outside hitter Sarah Wilhite, finished with 11 kills, one block, and one ace. This marks the first Red-Blue match of the summer for Wilhite. Setter Lauren Carlini played in one set in the scrimmage.

The final Red-Blue scrimmage will be played on May 26 at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California.
