Lippmann, Fromm Star as Germany Hangs on for 5-Set Win over Thailand

Germany def. Thailand 3-2

Germany put up 17 blocks and used 20-point efforts by Louisa Lippmann and Maren Fromm to edge past homestanding Thailand on Wednesday.

Germany outdid in kills (68-64) and blocks (17-8) to overcome 31 miscues (to 20 for Thailand) and a 7-6 deficit in aces.

Lippman notched 21 kills and a block, while Fromm added 17 kills, two blocks and an ace to pace the German attack. Marie Scholzel (15), Lisa Grunding (14) and Jennifer Geerties (10) also turned in double-digit scoring efforts. Scholzel tacked on nine kills and a team-best six blocks, while Grunding added seven putaways, six stuffs and an ace. Geerties chipped in eight kills and a team-leading two aces. Denise Hanke was not far behind, tallying nine points with six kills, two aces and a block.

Ajcharaporn Kongyot scored 22 points (20 kills, 1 block, 1 ace) to lead the Thai charge. Hattaya Bamrungsuk (17), Pleumjit Thinkaow (13) and Pimpichaya Kokram (11) followed. Bamrungsuk notched 11 kills, a team-leading three blocks and three aces, while Thinkaow added 11 putaways and two aces. Kokram downed nine kills and Chatchu-On Moksri rounded out the scoring with seven points, all on kills, despite playing in just two full sets and the fifth as a substitute.

The teams played to an 18-all tie in Set 1 before the Germans seized control. It took three tries at set point before a Geerties kill gave the visitors the 25-23 win.

Set 2 featured 14 ties, but it was the Thai team that earned the first set-point try. Germany thwarted that attempt and eventually sealed the 28-26 win on a on a Lippmann putaway.

It was another battle to the finish in Set 3, with the score standing at 20-all before Thailand surged ahead. A service error clinched the 25-23 win for the Thais on their second set-point try.

Germany held the early 11-7 lead in Set 4, but the teams were soon tied at 20. Thinkaow capped the 25-22 victory to force the fifth set.

Set 5 saw the teams again knotted up at 8-all, but it was nearly all Germany from there as the visitors scored seven of the last nine points to leave the home crowd begging.
